Now until Oct. 7th: bobrauschenbergamerica @ Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle St. (various times). An insanely entertaining play that enacts Rauchenberg's collages. Colorful, funny, bizarrely profound. Everyone ought to see this.

Now until who knows when: The Science of Sleep @ Loews Harvard Square. It's the new Michel Gondry film, starring Gabriel García Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Motorcycle Diaries) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (yes, Serge's fille and a veritable actrice in her own droît.) Indie pop film candy. Buy a ticket and say, "I'm hip, but not intimidating."

Oct. 12: Matmos @ Museum of Fine Arts (7:30pm). Innovative and conceptual San Francisco-based electronic duo. One of their albums was composed using sounds of medical procedures; their most recent was a set of musical portraits of semi-famous people.

Oct. 13: Animated films from Quebec @ Harvard Film Archives (7pm). A set of short, exuberant weirdnesses.

Oct. 15: Ellis Marsalis @ Symphony Hall (5pm). Premier jazz pianist from New Orleans, and the paterfamilias of the ridiculously talented Marsalis musicians. He'll be playing with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Oct. 17: Jolie Holland @ The Paradise (7pm). Jolie Holland sings American ghost stories with a voice that is instantly and deeply striking. If the stars align at the Paradise on this night, she will possess you. If you miss this show you are simply a sucker.

Oct. 24: Frank Black @ Avalon (8pm). Former Pixies frontman and top-notch songwriter. His sound is warmer and more mellow these days.

Oct. 25: Aguirre, the Wrath of God @ Harvard Film Archives (7pm). An
achingly beautiful movie by Werner Herzog, starring a chilling Klaus Kinski. It follows a team of obsessive conquistadors in Brazil.

Oct. 26-27: Dave Holland Quintet @ Regattabar (7:30pm and 10pm). One of the best jazz outfits currently in circulation. Holland's bass solos are just sick. With Robin Eubanks, Steve Nelson, Chris Potter, and Nate Smith.
