On a Thursday afternoon in mid April, one might expect the Career Services office to be buzzing with panicked post-PAE MPP2s and peripatetic mid-careers frantically seeking gainful employment as graduation looms ever closer.

But the only sound in the office at the moment is Patty Fitzsimons operating the office copier. She's been temping for the last two months in place of former Office Manager Anthony Williams, one of three employees to leave the Career Services office since last summer.

Associate Director Marc Cosentino announced his departure two weeks ago and will finish his eight-plus years of service on Friday, April 21. Director John Noble left in August of last year, prompting the ongoing search for a new director.

These three departures (Noble's was a surprise, Williams and Cosentino's were expected) have fueled continued student chatter about the status and effectiveness of the Career Services Office.

"There's a perception and there is a reality," says Associate Dean Joseph McCarthy, who has been heavily involved in overseeing the ongoing operations of the office and the search for a new director. "The perception is one that could obviously lead to questions and concerns, and I think logically so."

"Marc's leaving makes people wonder 'who's next or, my god, how are we going to compensate for this' and in the interim we've managed to find a very seasoned career professional," says McCarthy.

According to Janice Vaughn, Interim Deputy Director of Career Services the Career Services staff have all stepped up their efforts and the office has not missed a beat despite the departures.

"We weren't going to do a New York networking event, and we did that," says Vaughn. "We started the 'Conversations with Practitioners' series, which has been very well attended. We've introduced some new workshops."
